There are also various, short workshops where you practice specific teaching techniques and strategies. The TEFL course also includes 6 hours where you observe experienced ESL teachers leading their classes. In the final week of the TEFL course, you take over a live English class with real, non-native students, and teach 60-minute lessons for 5 days, during which you are observed and coached by your TEFL Trainer. In all you will have 15 hours of practical teaching and observation during the course.

The TEFL course I completed in Antigua, Guatemala more than fulfilled my expectations. I wanted a course that would provide me with information and practical teaching using best practices for TEFL/TESL. From the very beginning Karen, my instructor, began to model these best practices and worked to help the class feel comfortable with her and with each other. She used many teaching strategies so that there was never a dull moment. Many times we were out of our seats or up on the terrace. We learned about our own learning as well as how our students learn so that we can adjust our teaching to them. We had the opportunity to practice nearly every aspect of TEFL teaching with real English language learners. The guidance I received in all or my practice was invaluable. Because I have had success in all of these aspects of teaching English, I feel much more competent to teach.
The experience living abroad for a month proved to be important since it helped me to understand how my English language learners in the USA may feel in a foreign country. I appreciated Karen on many levels. She was and still is available to answer my questions. She honestly cares for her students. I appreciated that she took the time to share her expertise about Guatemala to help me plan a weekend away. Karen worked to help students get jobs. A couple of the students had jobs before the course was completed.
I found all the staff to be friendly and helpful. They knew my name. Whenever I had a question there was an answer.
One thing that I found difficult was a period of about a week and a half when I felt overwhelmed with deadlines. If there would be a way to spread some of this out, it might make those weeks a bit less stressful.
Overall though, this was an excellent experience and I would highly recommend this course.
