Description

Maximo Nivel’s award winning TEFL Certification Program is a thorough and practical introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). During the 150-hours 4-week course, you become familiar with the principles of successful ESL teaching and you develop real-world skills to be an effective English teacher. The TEFL program focuses on practical teaching, lesson planning, classroom management, and more. The training program includes 100 hours of in-class instruction, 35 hours of required reading and written assignments, and 15 hours of observation and practical teaching.

Practical teaching is the heart of the TEFL Certification program. You begin teaching mini-lessons in week 1 and continue throughout the course. There are also various, short workshops where you practice specific teaching techniques and strategies. The TEFL course also includes 6 hours where you observe experienced ESL teachers leading their classes. In the final week of the TEFL course, you take over a live English class with real, non-native students, and teach 60-minute lessons for 5 days, during which you are observed and coached by your TEFL Trainer. In all you will have 15 hours of practical teaching and observation during the course.

I can’t say anything bad about this course! It was tougher than what I had expected but the support from our teachers Karen and Claudia and Maximo Nivel as a whole was fabulous!

And Antigua, Guatemala is the spot to be for a month of study! Maximo is great at organizing daily activities and they also can plan trips outside Antigua for you! I would recommend spending more time in Guatemala either side of the course!

Normally, when you sign up for the TEFL Course you only have one teacher. I was fortunate enough to work with both Claudia for the first two weeks and Karen for my last two weeks. These two women are the backbone of this certification. The amount of time and dedication to get people through this course is an immense amount. Claudia got everyone through their mini-lessons, observation papers, and (what I found to be the most difficult) grammar week and our grammar paper. She set us up for success. Then, Karen came in at the perfect time to finish out the course with us. She brought us through weekly planning, our practical teaching week, and the formation of all of our portfolios. The amount of patience these women have is incredible. No matter how many times you needed something repeated, an example given, or one on one help, it was given. They also had the teacher sense to tell you ‘You’ve got it, just go put it into action and start typing (papers and lesson planning).’ Their support levels were, and continue to be through the roof. They made this course. I do wish we had more time in the classroom and more time spent on grammar. Grammar was my biggest struggle. I truly enjoyed my experience with this course.

Even before experiencing Maximo Nivel’s TEFL Training at COSI in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica, I knew they had to have an outstanding program both in terms of the experience itself and the outcomes for its students based on my experience studying Spanish with Maximo in Guatemala last summer. They know how to successfully teach languages as foreign languages, not just English. After going through the TEFL training I can attest that it prepares its graduates well and stands behind them. It is grueling, particularly Practical Teaching Week, but well worth the effort. For me the magic was in the method modeled in each of our “TEFL Time” lessons taught by our awesome trainer, Audra Wooldridge. She didn’t tell us how to teach, she modeled it and had us show her. I feel I am going away an English teacher, and a better foreign language teacher because it all applies. To future TEFLers, Maximo knows its programs so follow all the packing and preparation suggestions. Their staff is there for you; don’t hesitate to reach out to them. I went with the host family option and I strongly recommend that for this program. You definitely need your laptop and cell phone; bring them! And, don’t forget to plan for some fun in paradise. Manuel Antonio is an amazing place!

I took the tefl course in Peru with Sean and it was a very rewarding experience! Sean is a great instructor and gives very helpful feedback. The course is packed a lot of information and practice. I highly suggest that you get certified through Maxio Nivel!

I have actually heard about Maximo Nivel when I am already here in Cusco so I did not know much at first. I went directly to the school by myself to ask for the TEFL course information. The staffs are all very nice and the accommodation is also perfect, I stayed in the private apartment which was worth the money. The course was quite intense but it was super fun and perfect fit for one month. Everything is provided in the spacious TEFL classroom so technically you don’t need to bring anything. Sean is an incredible teacher who guided me to the correct way of teaching and a perfect example I could look for during or even before my practical teaching week. Taking TEFL was one of my amazing experiences that I’m so proud of and surely can pursue in the future.

I have nothing but positive things to report about my experience taking the TEFL course at Maximo! The curriculum is thorough yet streamlined and it provides plenty of opportunities to put one’s new teaching skills and theoretical knowledge into real practice in the classroom. Sean is a very skilled and experienced instructor and is deeply invested in the success of each of his students. 5 stars!

I recently completed my TEFL certification in June 2019 at Maximo Nivel.

I did a lot of research and reading through past reviews to make sure it was legitimate company and the quality of TEFL certification I was looking for.

It was a big decision to move halfway around the world and embark on a new chapter in a new field I have no prior experience. It was an incredible experience and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of classmates who are now great friends. I also was lucky enough to have an incredible host family who became my peruvian family. They kept me well fed and showed me not only the lifestyle here, but a lot of the culture and family experiences that were invaluable and highly treasured. Not having experience teaching, I was a little worried about being overwhelmed, but the four week course was very intensive and thorough, going through grammar, teaching styles and also plenty of practice classes with real Spanish students. The staff at Maximo are all too happy too help and having access to the TEFL room with couches, whiteboards and computers with great wifi made it a lot easier to finish class work and complete assessment. Our instructor Sean made classes fun, and helped us find our own teaching styles and drilled into us grammar and teaching methodologies, and the class wouldn’t have been the same without him. Cusco is an amazing city with very friendly people and I am very excited to continue my adventures in South America, travelling and teaching with my new TEFL certification. I was offered employment at Maximo upon completing my course which I think is a fantastic opportunity to further my teaching skills and fund my lifestyle here in Cusco. Anyone looking to travel and get a TEFL certification, I couldn’t recommend Maximo Nivel enough, and hope to continue my career with this company for quite some time to come.

I just finished my TEFL Certification and the experiance was wonderful. Sean is a great instructor and will definitely teach you the skills neccicarry to become a great teacher as well. The program is certainly legitimate and worth your time. The people here at Maximo are very nice and helpful. Coming here was definitely worth my time as it will be yours. If you want a TEFL Certification and an excuse to travel as a living this is it.

I had a great time during my TEFL training. Maximo Nivel was very supportive with anything I needed. My Guatemalan host family was great, and my trainer, Karen Wilke, was very informative, fun, and low-stress. You can make mistakes, and that’s okay. The teaching experience, as part of the course is very useful, and also cuts down on the stress you might feel when you start a teaching job.

There are so many schools and TEFL programs out there to choose from. I thought I was taking a chance by picking Maximo Nivel since I didn’t know much about the program. To me, the quality of both the course content and the instructor is really important, and Maximo Nivel’s program in Antigua exceeded my expectations. The course is clear, packed with information, practice, and review, and the instructor Karen Wilke is probably the best instructor I’ve ever had. She’s very experienced and is adept at establishing rapport with each of her students. If you’re looking at other options, I would suggest this one in Antigua simply because Karen is the instructor. Also, Guatemala is a BEAUTIFUL country with so much opportunity for weekend travel to astounding backpacking destinations.
