I completed my course with AVSE about eight years ago, so this might differ somewhat from the usual ones that I have recently read.
My instructor, David, was amazing and consistently went the extra mile during the course to instill in us (or me!) the right practices. We’ve all been there, so it’s quite a trial by fire, depending upon your perspective.
Reflecting on it, I wasn’t anywhere close to the top tier of our class by any means. My advice is to persevere until everything clicks, and you’ll experience a highly rewarding feeling. In my case, that feeling was short-lived, quickly followed by the sobering reality that I was the very last classmate to secure a job. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling, but I resolved to push through and diligently seek out that elusive first role, which I ultimately achieved.
Thanks to my persistence and refusal to give up, I spent four years teaching in Vietnam, with two of those years at universities. Subsequently, I was recruited by another university in Saudi Arabia, where I enjoyed a successful three-year tenure.
Along the way, I became a judge for the Education Board of South Vietnam in national competitions, attained an IELTS instructorship up to level 8.5, and was invited to serve as a mentor at a university of technology in Australia, an experience I found immensely gratifying, as I assisted students in their respective fields and challenges faced.
Looking back, it has all been incredibly worthwhile. I’ve had the opportunity to meet remarkable individuals and immerse myself in customs that I never imagined that I would be a part of.
In wrapping up, if you find yourself on the fence, something has indeed led you here today, to reading this very passage.
This summer, I am excited to announce that I will be teaching at a boarding school founded in the 6th century AD, revealing the unpredictability of the path ahead.
Embrace the journey ahead without too much fear, and keep moving forward. I eagerly anticipate reading your own story in the future. Good luck!
