Description

Cambridge Assessment English approved the opening of Teaching House in 2007. With the aim to expand quality English-language teacher training in the United States, Teaching House has opened over 15 center locations and trained over 3,000 new teachers. Teaching House is now the largest provider of Cambridge CELTA courses in the world.

Ensuring the high standards of education that are set by Cambridge English, all Teaching House CELTA courses have a maximum of only 6 trainees working with each trainer. To fulfill this trainer/trainee ratio, the Teaching House staff include over 20 Cambridge English-approved teacher trainers as well as a strong support team based at our headquarters in New York.

In addition to the standard four-week CELTA course format, Teaching House has developed two new formats:

  • a 10-week part-time course run on two evenings a week and on Saturdays;
  • a part-time blended course over 14 weeks allowing people to work online during the week and do teaching practice on Saturdays.

We also offer in the USA a two week compressed teaching practice option with online content, for those who are only able to take two weeks for their teaching practice component.

Even though I’m a qualified primary school teacher with many years of experience, I learnt so much on the Teaching House CELTA face to face course which I recently completed. The tutors were really friendly, helpful and enthusiastic, the mode of learning was student-centred, and so the course was really engaging. It’s a top quality course and we were provided with lots of material and resources that we’ll be able to use in our practice as EFL teachers. I’d really recommend Teaching House for anyone looking to gain a CELTA qualification.

I have done two online teaching trainings now, both counting for 120 hours. While the first one I completed was decent and gave me the opportunity to practice teaching, there were a number of ways in which Teaching House was head and shoulders above it.

The main difference was that the teaching practice itself was a much more enriching experience. The students provided by Teaching House were real English learners (as opposed to having my fellow trainees pretend to be English learners), and I had the opportunity to teach both pre-intermediate and upper intermediate learners. This experience included learning how to provide error correction, which despite already having a teaching certification under my belt I still needed to give about four lessons with Teaching House before I was able to clearly identify and correct errors during a lesson. What’s more, the feedback I received on each lesson was much more thorough, with specific points made both about what was working well in the lesson as well as suggested areas of improvement. This was in part possible by the expectation of detailed lesson plans for each lesson given, with later lessons requiring a detailed language analysis for the target language of the lesson.

There were also a few other areas where Teaching House exceled. For example, the main form of delivery for learning how to teach came in the form of interactive live lessons. While these were present on the tefl.org course, they were a much smaller part, with the bulk of the expected 120 course hours coming from online videos and multiple choice tests. Teaching House does have online modules available, but excluding about three observations of experienced teachers, this was optional. In addition, instead of having multiple choice tests, Teaching House offers several in-depth writing assignments, each targeted at a particular facet of teaching (needs of the learners, language analysis, ideas for professional development, and creating a lesson to teach an authentic piece of English media).

It is worth noting that because many of the parts of the course offered by Teaching House are interactive, this course constitutes a more substantial time commitment. However, despite the rigor of the course, my tutors were surprisingly flexible. For example, I had to miss one of my later lessons due to personal circumstances, and I was able to make it up the following week. Of course, this made the already intensive course even more intense, but it’s nice to know that life can happen and there’ll still be a way to finish what you started.

I’m glad I took the CELTA course，which

completely changed my perception of teaching. It made me realize students should always be the focus of a lesson instead of the teacher. Because of the CELTA，I‘m much closer to the teacher I wanna be. By the way，JP and Stephanie are excellent tutors. I was lucky to learn from the best. If you want to be an ESL teacher，CELTA would be the right course for you，and it could well prepare you to be a great teacher！ Anyways，it is strongly recommended！

This course far exceeded my expectations! As someone in the education field already, I have taken many online professional development courses and seminars with varying degrees of satisfaction. However, this course truly challenged me, requiring me to expand the ways in which I think about teaching. As frustrating as the very specific lesson planning methods that CELTA requires were at first, I grew to appreciate the reliability and organization of the structure it provides. Also, requiring such an exacting level of preparedness for each teaching practice ensured that I really know my stuff, so I learned as I prepared to teach — a beautiful thing! My tutors were professional and helpful, making sure I got what I needed to be successful in the course. Now that I have completed the 10 weeks, I feel ready to enter the job market where I know my CELTA certificate will help me stand out. Couldn’t ask for more 🙂

I had been looking into getting my CELTA for a while but knew the time commitment it would take. Due to life and work this made getting it a little difficult. When I found out CELTA went online I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me to get the certification. Doing your CELTA online has its perks and challenges, but any learning environment does. ( zero travel time, pajama pants!) Now, having completed the course I can 200% recommend getting your CELTA through Teaching House. From the beginning to the end there was clear communication and support. The teaching tools and experiences I have gained throughout the course are priceless. The trainers provided excellent feedback and support, are well experienced, and were engaging throughout. The positivity and encouragement throughout the process were uplifting to all candidates. (Thank you JP & Stephanie) I had previously been teaching English to children and came to Teaching House with zero experience teaching adults. I also have no formal education in teaching. I am now leaving with the tools, experience, and confidence to provide high-quality classes to adult learners now. I will also be utilizing many of the techniques I learned with my young learners. The high quality of training I received through Teaching House has also motivated me to pursue further training and Cambridge certifications now. Truly it was a 5-star experience! If you want to be a 5-star teacher then there is simply no other thing to do than to get your CELTA through Teaching House. – 😁 your future DELTA candidate

Amazing course! Before taking the CELTA course, I had already been teaching in a different domain for some years, and though teaching English is far from what I have been doing, the lessons I learned while doing the CELTA have helped me improve even there. The instructors are passionate, compassionate, and extremely knowledgeable. The level of feedback they provide is next level, and while they’ll pick and poke at every little detail they can, it never felt nit-picky; everything they point out is meaningful and insightful even at the smallest level of detail. They provided me exactly what I needed, nothing more, nothing less, and were frequently and consistently available. I’m 100% certain I made the right choice going with Teaching House.

While I was hesitant to do the CELTA course 100% online, I can truly say that the experience exceeded my expectations, and I’d highly recommend it.

Let’s face it: online teaching isn’t going away. I decided to embrace that fact, and take the CELTA course over Zoom and Cambridge’s online platform.

The good news is, even if you’re planning on teaching in a face-to-face environment, the CELTA course tutors equip you with the tools you need to teach an effective English class in either setting. Everything you learn can be easily applied to a real-life classroom.

And for someone like me who has almost zero experience actually teaching, the course tutors Raga and Stephanie did a fantastic job of laying the groundwork for how to structure a lesson for English language learners. The emphasis on centering the students’ needs was fantastic, and we were encouraged to help our fellow students with feedback every day.

The work is tough, but if you pay attention and stay on top of your assignments, you will succeed in the course. Our course tutors made themselves available as much as possible when we ran into snags. I would recommend reading up a bit about the methodology used in the course because you will be expected to follow it fairly rigorously.

Even though we couldn’t meet in person, it was a pleasure to get to know my fellow candidates remotely, and we’ll surely be keeping in touch.

If you’re considering a transition into a TEFL career and are serious about learning new skills to teach English effectively, I highly recommend taking a CELTA course.

I have so much to say about the quality of this course. However, I will list my favorite points here.

My tutor Raga was the absolute best! She is so knowledgeable and professional in the world of CELTA! I am grateful for her because she stretched me past my limits. She challenged me in a way that I have never been challenged academically. Thank you, Raga! I will never ever forget her and the wisdom she’s imparted in me!

Next, the course quality is very high! Cambridge has definitely lived up to its’ name! Thank you. Nowadays, standards are sometime mediocre or low, but Cambridge has lived up to the name 100%. Thank you.

Finally, Stephanie was the sweet treat at the end of the course. I feel in love with her light heart and playful demeanor. Because after the intensity of Raga’s level 1, we all were relieved to have Stephanie!

Again, thank you Teaching House for making my dreams come true. I will see you again for my DELTA next year.

I recommend CELTA for those hoping to raise their awareness and knowledge of teaching practices and methodologies that are quintessential to the ESL/EFL industry. I recommend it because it tests your preconceived ideas about English language instruction and — if you are committed — you will graduate with new understandings and resources to back it up. I struggled with the large heft of information that is provided to you at the beginning, but overtime I able to put all the pieces together. For all intents and purposes the course relies on self-discipline and constructive criticism, so for those that are fresh on the EFL scene and need their hand held it is probably not the best choice for them. With that being said my classmates and I worked very well together, we now share a unique bond in the face of all the challenges. If I was to do something differently now that I’m looking back on it, I would probably think of better ways of compartmentalizing key lesson planning information in a logical sequence so I don’t get lost or off track — and read the instructions for assignments very carefully!
