Description

Cambridge Assessment English approved the opening of Teaching House in 2007. With the aim to expand quality English-language teacher training in the United States, Teaching House has opened over 15 center locations and trained over 3,000 new teachers. Teaching House is now the largest provider of Cambridge CELTA courses in the world.

Ensuring the high standards of education that are set by Cambridge English, all Teaching House CELTA courses have a maximum of only 6 trainees working with each trainer. To fulfill this trainer/trainee ratio, the Teaching House staff include over 20 Cambridge English-approved teacher trainers as well as a strong support team based at our headquarters in New York.

In addition to the standard four-week CELTA course format, Teaching House has developed two new formats:

  • a 10-week part-time course run on two evenings a week and on Saturdays;
  • a part-time blended course over 14 weeks allowing people to work online during the week and do teaching practice on Saturdays.

We also offer in the USA a two week compressed teaching practice option with online content, for those who are only able to take two weeks for their teaching practice component.

If you are looking for a course to help you teach English as a Second language, this is the course. Fantastic material, mentor teachers and resources. I highly recommend the course.

I just completed my CELTA training with Teaching House. It was a great experience. The course was very well run and our two tutors were excellent. Their explanations were clear and they had an infectious enthusiasm for English language teaching.

CELTA is a lot of work, but well worth it. I’m looking forward to a short break now before I start putting the skills I learned at Teaching House in to action.

I would highly recommend this Teaching House course to anyone wanting to strengthen their abilities and build their skill set for teaching adults. The course is very intense, and right from the beginning it stretches one’s focus and determination; there is a lot of information coming from a lot of different places on a lot of different topics and it can be quite overwhelming in the first few days. But because of this direct approach it quickly hones in on problem areas, strengths, and strategies for improvement. The sense of accomplishment is proportional to the level of difficulty, and I was amazed to see how much I had improved and how much more confident I was in my skills after completing the course.

The materials provided are excellent and varied, so there are resources on hand in almost every area a teacher might need; and whatever is not covered in the materials is expertly provided by the tutors. They share their knowledge and experience for the benefit of the trainees as well as the students, and are encouraging and insightful. They provide a balance of a guiding hand and an observer, while giving the honest assessments and pointed feedback that are crucial for improvement. At every turn you feel that they want you to succeed, and they share in your successes and are genuinely striving to make sure you are prepared to enter the teaching world. There were a few instances where there seemed to be a breakdown in communication between the tutors, and we received differing information, but any issues that arose were cleared up quickly and clearly once brought to their attention.

The teaching practices can be intimidating at first, but turn out to be some of the most beneficial teaching you can do. The students were attentive and driven, bringing many different motivations, backgrounds, and interests to the classroom. To teach them, while being observed by your tutors and fellow trainees and receiving their feedback, will show you what kind of teacher you are and how you can be the best for your students. This course does an amazing job of centering your focus on the students, and doing all you can to facilitate meaningful language acquisition. Learning to assess your students and their areas of need is an incredibly valuable skill.

The other trainees on the course were invaluable, working together through confusion and intimidation and stress, providing sounding boards for ideas, and giving feedback and encouragement. I would recommend anyone taking the course to communicate with their fellow trainees as much as possible; they can be a great help if there are times where information is confusing or non-existent.

Overall I am greatly satisfied with the course and the skills it has given me, and the confidence I now have knowing that I measured up to such a high standard.

The CLETA course with Teaching House was a fantastic experience for me. The idea of student-centeredness is the most valuable legacy from it for me, refreshing I understanding on the role of a teacher. The course-setting is intensive and efficient, for which I’ve learnt a lot of useful teaching methods and skills and got sufficient opportunity to put them into practice. And the tutors are very professional and always ready-to-help; for which I was super grateful. I only regret not devoting enough efforts to make most of the course.

Anyway, the course’s really worth it.

It was a very supportive team of teachers who guided us along the way who motivated us throughout the course.

There are many more good points about the course.

Some of them are:

Highly -qualified staff

Great support

Easy to follow the course

Action points:

Feedback on assignments and TPS from tutors should be more detailed

At the beginning it was tough to get to grips with everything due to the overload of information on how to use Moodle, write assignments and using Zoom

My personal struggle was with FOL assignment. It was confusing and not precise in terms of how I should write it

Vague explanations

On the upside of things, everything went well and I completed the course successfully.

I appreciate the tutors’ dedication and hard work.

The CELTA course with Teaching House exceeded my expectations by far – it was extremely well organised and the tutors were great. I learnt a lot over the month and was really happy I decided to register in the end. The content during the course is very informative and students are provided with a wealth of resources to take with them as well. I would highly recommend.

Teaching House in NYC was an incredible school to obtain my CELTA with two course tutors that guided us through the whole experience with their incredible teaching backgrounds. The course flew by smoothly and I learned so much in a short period of time. Working with real learners, daily, and in-person, solidified the whole experience and made me feel ready to go out and teach in the world!

I thoroughly enjoyed this course due to its professionalism and collaborative nature. I am a certified teacher, yet I found tons of new things to learn. Teacher’s qualifications are never completely finished. I have taken the CELTA with Teaching House, and I am more than satisfied with the experience.

The course has helped me improve in many areas: I have bettered my classroom management skills, leveled up my lesson planning, and sharpened my language analysis.

The instructors who guided me through the course were highly skilled professionals. They offered insightful feedback and shared their teaching experience generously.

Last but not least, the teaching practice was superb. I had the opportunity to work with students of diverse language and culture backgrounds from all over the world.

I have just completed Teaching House’s Cambridge CELTA (online) month intensive course.

It was invaluable to have many opportunities to teach live, with preparation guidance and immediate peer and tutor feedback.

Teaching House has a strong student-centered philosophy, where your growth is prioritized while you gain excellent methods to be a future student-centered teacher.

During the course Teaching House provides even more resources than you can take advantage of, and they are available after you graduate as well.

I am excited to continue my education and study, but the program is a foundation that I will reference for life. (Fringe benefit – a very nice community, and the knowledge that you can do most anything you put your mind to!)
