Description

Cambridge Assessment English approved the opening of Teaching House in 2007. With the aim to expand quality English-language teacher training in the United States, Teaching House has opened over 15 center locations and trained over 3,000 new teachers. Teaching House is now the largest provider of Cambridge CELTA courses in the world.

Ensuring the high standards of education that are set by Cambridge English, all Teaching House CELTA courses have a maximum of only 6 trainees working with each trainer. To fulfill this trainer/trainee ratio, the Teaching House staff include over 20 Cambridge English-approved teacher trainers as well as a strong support team based at our headquarters in New York.

In addition to the standard four-week CELTA course format, Teaching House has developed two new formats:

  • a 10-week part-time course run on two evenings a week and on Saturdays;
  • a part-time blended course over 14 weeks allowing people to work online during the week and do teaching practice on Saturdays.

We also offer in the USA a two week compressed teaching practice option with online content, for those who are only able to take two weeks for their teaching practice component.

I haven’t tried their job assistance but hopefully that is as excellent as everything else. I hoped to feel confident about teaching after this is over and I really do! The tutors were amazing tutors. They gave us really great advise once the course was done. Though I’m glad it’s over, I will miss the teachers and the other students.

I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to get into English teaching. If you’re worried about it being online, don’t be; I was a bit hesitant myself, thinking how provision would be affected by the course being run entirely online and the teaching practice via zoom. But, I was surprised by how effective the course was and don’t feel like I missed out on anything due to the online format. 100% recommend this course.

Taking the CELTA has been a rewarding experience for me. My tutors offered professional instructions, guidance and suggestions in every input, teaching practice and assignment. The course was intensive, but it was beneficial to learn and then practice teaching skills right away. I’ve appreciated all the feedback and suggestions my tutors offered, which I believe was very helpful! Also, it was interesting to have two multilingual classes to teach in the course. Overall, a rewarding experience!

Great experience. It is hard to commit to an expensive course like the CELTA, but I am very pleased with my CELTA experience at Teaching House. We were given ample resources to work with, including several books, and the instructors (tutors) were very professional. They had a great deal of practical knowledge and provided great feedback and guidance. The course was much more challenging than I had expected. I was in the part-time course and it was still an intense ten weeks where I learned a lot and grew considerably. Great experience and well worth the time and money. Very happy that I chose Teaching House for my CELTA course.

The intensive online program is intense. That said, the resources provided made everything come together seamlessly. It is great experience to teach two levels of students and be able to contribute to peer observation. I wish it were a 2 month program so that I can keep learning new things.

This review is prefaced on two things:

1. The course was online

2. Tutors spoke extensively about classroom teaching experience, but not specifically online teaching experience, so I don’t know the extent of online training amongst tutors.

Overall, I learned a lot in the CELTA course from Teaching House. I’m glad I did it.

Pros:

1. Tutors have extensive experience.

2. Online format makes program accessible to more people.

3. Offers practice teaching multiple levels of students.

4. Offers instruction from multiple tutors, translating to exposure to a variety of experiences and approaches.

Cons:

1. Part time course only: I was told during my interview I would have a maximum of 5-6 hours of work to do outside class during the course per WEEK. I’m not a perfectionist, and I easily spent 2+ hours per DAY outside class. It was enough to pass, but not something I would recommend to people who work full time and have young children, like me. I can only imagine the demands of the full time course, if this was my experience with part time.

2. Students are held to strict rubrics for adjudication, but tutors are not. The positive is you get the input of more than one tutor. The negative is they may have drastically different demands and approaches, despite the same rubric. I found it stressful to figure out the essential material given different approaches/style.

3. Depending on your tutor, the course feels self-taught from online material. Yes, my questions were always answered when I posed them, but I was surprised how much was left wholly to the individual, considering novice teachers (which I am not) could enroll.

4. Course books out of date, sometimes irrelevant to students depending upon topic.

5. Online material organization chaotic and difficult to manage.

Do I regret having taken the course? No, not at all. I would do it again.

Will I take another separate course specifically in online instruction? Absolutely yes. This course only scratched the surface of what there is to learn.

One of the best on-line courses I have ever taken. All the tutors are professional and helpful. They always provide you good course content and prepare you very well for the teaching practice in guided planning. I would definitely come back and take DELTA with them, cheers!

Great quality instruction and practice. The layout of the course was good. My only struggle was with a complicated system for retrieving resources. (The resources provided were excellent thought.)

I really loved the way the course was formatted, especially having all students teach two levels of students. That was one of the biggest learning factors for me because it forced me to look at teaching materials from a different lens and really think about prioritizing the students first and how they would perceive information. I look forward to continue to learn and practice all of the strategies and teaching frameworks i have learned during CELTA!
