I was told about myTEFL by an acquaintance who had used & like it. The course (120 Hours) was clearly designed by someone, or rather a group of ‘someones’, with both knowledge of linguistics & teaching experience. You might think this goes without saying, but then we all know there is no shortage of people on the net trying to make a quick buck off a naive, aspiring English teacher. Let me assure you that with myTEFL this is not the case.
The lesson modules are arranged in such a way as to introduce new material while reinforcing the old, which is itself a lesson in teaching. The pacing was good in that no one lesson seemed too long or too short, although certainly some material may take a while (e.g. phonetic transcription) for newcomers to get the hang of. The writing of lessons itself was coherent, efficient, & uniformly grammatical.
As for weaknesses, they were few & negligible. I don’t consider myself a master-class grammarian, but there was one definite example of incorrectness (lesson 85 has a ‘predicate noun’ labeled as an ‘indirect object’). Also, to someone with a background in language, some of their phraseology will need to be learned because it differs from the usual (e.g. ‘adjective noun’ or something like it is used in place of ‘apposite noun/noun adjunct’). Keep in mind that the terms they use are for the teaching of English, and it’s never beneficial to get bogged down in sophisticated nomenclature, not even with native speakers.
All in all it was entirely worth the time and money. Give it a go.
