At first I was hesitant about taking the 120 MyTEFL course, but I’m glad I went ahead and did it. The course starts out with plenty of information about teaching English abroad in different countries with cultures very different from my own. It was fascinating to learn about the different ways teaching, respect, and formality are viewed across cultures. The course then jumps into how to run a classroom. Before starting the course, I had no idea how much work goes into making a classroom fun and engaging. They brought up issues like tech availability and seating arrangements, things I’d never even considered could be problematic. I took notes throughout the course and will definitely be using them as reference when setting up and running my classroom, eventually.
The course then goes deep into grammar and vocabulary and syntax and functions; all the things I’d learned in school and forgotten. I felt I received a whole new education on the English language. Even if I can’t teach for a while due to COVID, the information and grammar brush-up was useful to me as a writer anyway. I did find the grammar sections to be very boring and hard to get through, mostly due to the fact that I already understand most of it. There were tests at the end of each section which helped with memorization. However, I wished there was more involved practice than just multiple choice questions.
I would also suggest this course to people who are good at time management. I had to extend the course because I miscalculated how much time it would take to finish. It’s full of information, which takes a long time to process while taking informative notes along the way. I didn’t use the offered resources a lot, but they are there and they are very helpful. I did chat with tutors once in a while and they were very knowledgeable about the course.
Overall, I really enjoyed the course and hope it will lead me to meaning experiences both in and out of the classroom.
