In the end I loved it. Elizabeth was first class. I didn’t sign up for an on-line Zoom class (the Madrid class cancelled because of Covid) and I was very unsure. Elizabeth gave me the confidence to ‘give it a go’. I guess for most younger students, zoom would not have been too much of a stretch but for me it was incredibly daunting. The first weekend I spent more time worrying abot Zoom than the lesson (not good). Without Elizabeth’s calming and supporting manner, I would have definitely given up after the first weekend. I’m very glad that I didn’t. Perhaps for older students, or anyone unfamiliar with Zoom, you could offer a short online introduction to Zoom prior the course? I know that this would have helped me a lot. I also underestimated that quality of the internet connection I needed. If I had know in advance, I would never have started the course from my house. I did the second weekend at a friend’s house who has cable.

Elizabeth is a great teacher and I learnt a lot from her during the four days of the Virtual Classroom Course. She managed to make the course fun and engaging without making it too easy for us. We were introduced to different teaching methods and styles which really helped us understand how the content (vocabulary/grammar/reading, writing, listening, speaking) can be taught in an easy and comprehensible way. Elizabeth didn’t only make sure that we learnt how to create interesting and enjoyable lessons on Zoom but also showed us what doesn’t work so well or in which cases we need to give the students more information or support. Her feedback to our lessons was very helpful and we were able to profit from her longtime experience as a language teacher.

Anthony is a great professor and really help you when you find difficulties. He is very polite and passionate during the class.

The course led by Elizabeth was excellent. We were taught all key aspects of teaching in a fun, engaging and practical way. Elizabeth did an amazing job as a teacher and roll model, clearly guiding us through our first teaching experiences, building knowledge and confidence in our own abilities. I initially feared that the virtual aspect could be a barrier when teaching. I now believe the opposite is true, having learnt all kinds of skills and interactive ideas to use to my advantage when teaching online.

You get what you pay for.

The course itself is not taken seriously and was a source of embarrassment when I TEFLed. It turns out I got the job because I had previous teaching experience rather than this Mickey Mouse qualification. When I returned to England, no one would take me seriously because of it.

Although he was quite knowledgeable and the 3 days of teaching were reasonable, the tutor, ASIF, was extremely arrogant and I will never forget how he maliciously humiliated me in front of the rest of the group, just cheap laughs at my expense.

I was nearly 40 and the rest of the group where in their early 20s. I was the only bald person in the group and comments such as

“and if you want to say ‘hair’, you can just point at your hair – unless you’re Mark, of course! Hahaha!!” were most unwelcome and extremely offensive.

I hated him from this moment, but I had to hide my feelings because I already had a job offer, dependent on getting this dubious qualification.

And I thought it was very unprofessional how the company would not give me the certificate until I gave them positive feedback!

Tefl.org and Asif in particular should be avoided. You have been warned.

Clare made the online teaching a very valuable, practical and enjoyable experience. The descriptions of different lesson plans were extremely useful. Techniques and ideas shared by other students in the practicum made the course particularly good.

The practical aspect of using Zoom and engaging with its various features has really helped with my first ‘real’ lessons. If there were some way of increasing the actual online teaching time to more than 10 minutes I am sure it would improve an already excellent course. I realise that there are time pressures.

Thank you again to Clare for her relaxed, focussed and friendly style. Definitely something to emulate.
