Description
We are one of only two universities in the United States to offer the world renowned CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Cambridge English Language Assessment.
CELTA is one of the most widely accepted TEFL/TESOL qualifications in the world. This 180 hour teaching certification program provides the skills, knowledge, and hands-on practice to pursue a rewarding career in teaching at home or abroad.
Being located on the Missouri State University campus allows trainees to take advantage of many resources and facilities other programs cannot provide, including a state of the art library, abundant computer labs, and world class fitness center.
In five full-time weeks, you will get experience and feedback teaching in-person and get the opportunity to interact with your trainers, peers, and students in-person.
The CELTA Mixed Mode course option gives you the best of online and in-person instruction, with opportunities to complete face-to-face instruction and online lessons.
The 100% Online CELTA has the same content and hours as the face-to-face CELTA – the only difference is the online structure of the course. You will complete all CELTA requirements from the comfort and safety of your own home. This includes:
- 4 written assignments
- 6 hours of observations of experienced teachers
- 6 hours of assessed teaching practice with international students
- Daily individualized assisted lesson planning time with your trainer
- Daily input sessions on topics related to teaching the English language
Your certificate will not specify that you completed the course online. You will get the standard CELTA Certificate, certifying that you have completed 120 hours of training. You will also get a certificate in Teaching English Online from Missouri State University.
I was very pleased with my experience at Missouri State. According to my research, the Springfield area has the lowest cost-of-living of all the areas in the USA where the CELTA course is offered. I actually moved to Springfield (briefly) just for this course, and I think I made the right decision.
The facilities are great (quiet, designated computer lab with printer; classrooms with computer and projector). I believe as with all CELTA courses, they recruit area ESL students whom you can practice on. We had a good mix in our classes of Saudis and Chinese and there was a Columbian woman, a Mexican woman, and an Italian guy. It was so much fun working with such a diverse group of students. There was also some regional diversity within the CELTA trainee group.
The course instructors and manager were friendly, solicitous, and experienced. They instructed us with helpful content (particulary geared toward newer teachers) and gave thoughtful feedback after each of our student-teaching sessions. The manager also followed up with interest in my job search.
I was able to get an overseas job straight out of the program. I think this speaks partially to the CELTA document being a clearly valuable qualification. More importantly, the student-teaching hours and the comments I received from my instructors and peers have undoubtedly made me a better and more reflective, confident teacher.
Of course, I have not experienced a CELTA course at any other location, but if you are looking for this qualification and you are cost-conscious, Springfield would be a great location to get ‘er done!
