Maximo Nivel’s award winning TEFL Certification Program is a thorough and practical introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). During the 150-hours 4-week course, you become familiar with the principles of successful ESL teaching and you develop real-world skills to be an effective English teacher. The TEFL program focuses on practical teaching, lesson planning, classroom management, and more. The training program includes 100 hours of in-class instruction, 35 hours of required reading and written assignments, and 15 hours of observation and practical teaching.
Practical teaching is the heart of the TEFL Certification program. You begin teaching mini-lessons in week 1 and continue throughout the course. There are also various, short workshops where you practice specific teaching techniques and strategies. The TEFL course also includes 6 hours where you observe experienced ESL teachers leading their classes. In the final week of the TEFL course, you take over a live English class with real, non-native students, and teach 60-minute lessons for 5 days, during which you are observed and coached by your TEFL Trainer. In all you will have 15 hours of practical teaching and observation during the course.

For many years I’ve planned on getting my TEFL certificate and teaching English in countries across the world. I always saw it as something that would finally be my ticket for traveling to every far-off place I’ve ever dreamed of. Once I knew that my university graduation was surely approaching, I began to look earnestly at my options. I thought maybe online would be the easiest and cheapest way to do it. However, after my experience with online courses and knowing myself, I knew that an online course would not allow me to feel prepared to make the huge leap into teaching in a foreign country with a classroom of students right in front of me. I knew I needed to get out there, to push myself and test my limits if I was ever going to feel like teaching abroad was a serious path for me. As it were, I had recently subscribed to the GoAbroad.com newsletter and saw that the Maximo Nivel TEFL program was a highly recommended TEFL course, recognized internationally as a respectable and thorough program responsible for preparing teachers to be of the highest standard in international English education. I knew I was serious about becoming a professional and effective teacher and felt that this program, in Cusco, Peru, would be my guide and my anchor in reaching my career aspirations.
Before I arrived in Cusco, I anticipated that the course would be challenging but I didn’t expect it to challenge me too much since I had heard some stories of easy TEFL courses that taught little and gave students little practical experience teaching before sending them off with a certificate. In the end, this program challenged me even more than I imagined and because of it, I feel so much more confident that I can be a successful ESL teacher whenever I choose to pursue this path. In that sense, I’d say that my expectations have been met and exceeded. I feel lucky to have had such excellent trainers and classmates who’ve supported my learning at every step. The staff, teachers, and students at Maximo have also contributed greatly to my experience here and I’m grateful to them all for providing such a positive and uplifting environment during my time here.
In addition to informative and engaging lessons and practical teaching experience, we were also able to observe real classes taught by talented teachers at Maximo. This was an incredibly helpful learning tool as it gave us first-hand experience of what was effective in an ESL classroom. One of the most rewarding aspects was to see how the teachers build rapport with their students and create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and strongly conducive to learning. It was also amazing to see how teachers used the very same ESL techniques that we were learning in our classes. Proof that our trainers know what they’re talking about!
After completing this course I now have a clearer vision than ever regarding what I hope to do in the future. I have so many places in mind, so many dreams ready for chasing and because of this certification, I feel as if all the doors are wide open.
