After searching the internet for hours and trawling through all of the different TEFL course providers, I decided to go with The TEFL Institute as the website looked much more professional than any others. I wasn’t disappointed with the content and guidance; I score it 10/10.

Job advice was valuable, especially on how to start my freelance career teaching English online. Overall very pleased with the Institution.

I just finished my 120h training with the TEFL institute. Because I already had a TESOL certificate (from another institution) before starting this course, it was impossible for me not to compare my previous learning experience with the current one.

I will now share some pros and cons and you decide for yourself if this course is for you.

First, the pros:

1. The price is very reasonable and they offer many discounts throughout the year! A few days after I purchased my course, the price dropped by 100 euros!

2. They reply very fast and are open to helping you get the best possible experience. I haven’t checked it with them more than 5 times (tops) but I received help every single time. I have to say the biggest plus is their human element.

3. The website interface is very easy to navigate, with only a few glitches here and there (particularly one annoying error that kept happening during log-in). A big plus is the timer in the corner of the page, which tells you how long before your access expires.

4. If you need a certificate that you can get with little to moderate effort, this is the one for you.

5. You get out of this exactly what you put in – no more, no less. If you want to make this a good learning experience, apply yourself and be diligent. I checked every reference they offered, every website and every video. I took notes and spent extra time researching some of the things they taught. I suggest you do the same if you want this course to measure up to the money, time and energy you will spend on it.

With that in mind, here are the cons which I will limit at five (but there are more than 5):

1. As far as course content goes, this is a very -VERY- brief review of EFL teaching. You can use this as a starting point, but do not expect the materials to go into depth.

2. I was completely shocked to discover the teaching is done solely through text and audio, no video! In today’s day and age where anyone can make a good quality video on their phone, this just feels extremely lazy. There are countless platforms that offer video training, so know you have options.

3. The audio and text don’t always match. I listened to the audio and read the text at the same time. Sometimes the audio just repeats random paragraphs or skips others entirely.

4. The voice in the audio is robotic. Most likely they used text to speech robot, which is not just lazy but very disrespectful to the paying customer. Every now and then you’ll hear a human voice, but the majority of the audio sounds exactly like the robotic Google voice. I got used to it eventually and it became funny at some point, but this is definitely a very low point.

5. Don’t bother applying to this course if you don’t have a bachelor’s degree. Apply to this job if you’re not a native speaker at your own risk. The majority of jobs they offer through their job support require you to be a native and have a college degree. I’m not a native and I don’t have a bachelor’s either, so I had to learn this the hard way. You’ve been warned.

All in all, I am giving it a 6/10. I would recommend this to someone who is a native speaker, already has some teaching training/experience and needs a quick, relatively cheap certificate.
