The Language House TEFL was well worth the effort. The course is quite intensive, as advertised. In retrospect, it was the intensive nature of the course that most effectively prepared me for the life of a teacher in Prague. The instructors are extraordinarily well versed and as helpful as they come. From lesson planning help to job placement assistance; The Language House TEFL staff certainly goes the extra mile. The ample practice teaching experience was invaluable and without a doubt reveals the necessary jarring experience of teaching English as a second language; better learned with the guidance of professionals in my opinion!

On a whole, The Language House TEFL not only prepared me for the life of a teacher in Prague but also provided a supportive community of colleagues and friends for building a life abroad!

I chose TLH TEFL essentially because of the positive reviews and lo and behold I find myself writing one of the same ilk. To be honest I didn’t look at a vast amount of TEFL courses but I knew that I wanted to be in Europe and it was TLH TEFL that popped up every time.

It was definitely challenging and even though I like to think of myself as a pretty academically adept person the experience was something completely different. When I started I didn’t know the difference between a relative clause and Santa Calus but by the time I finished I felt more than confident enough to start developing a firm student-base of private students which I’m currently enjoying thoroughly.

Just one thing, don’t expect to take this course (or any TEFL course) and be handed a job at the end. TLH give you all the facilities and guidance you could possibly need to help secure a job in schools and gain private students, but you have to put the leg-work in. There’s so much opportunity available in Prague alone, but TLH will definitely give you the tools to take advantage of them.

The Language House TEFL course was a very positive experience. It’s a lot of work, but help is always readily available through members of the staff, including from the founder, Chris. They make it clear from the start that you get what you put into the course and that is true, so work hard and you will absolutely do fine. Through knowledgable teachers and observers the course covers everything from grammar, teaching methodologies, resources, different types of classes you might teach (i.e. certificate courses, Business English), job placements, visas, living situations, phonetics and of course, lesson planning coupled with actual teaching experience (10 group classes from beginners to advanced students and 2 one-on-ones). I highly recommend the course to serious students looking to move abroad and teach English as it is well-rounded and able to meet the needs of many types of learners.

I had an incredible time during the March course at TLH in Prague. I graduated on Friday, and had my first paid lesson that Sunday! Chris, Skip, Kizz, Marlene and Andrea were my teachers throughout the course, and made each day entertaining and informative. It is definitely a stressful month, but I left feeling incredibly confident in my teaching abilities.

We had lesson planning 4 days a week and taught various levels throughout the time, which is great to prepare yourself for a real environment.

You get support before your start your course, during your course and after! Chris Westergaard continues to pass information my way whenever I need it. There is a huge amount of support not just from the teachers but past graduates as well. The money was certainly well spent. Thank you!

I did the language house in August 2012 and it was fantastic! I finished the course feeling like I had a good grasp of everything covered and I felt truly comfortable teaching by the end. While the course itself was great I think that my favorite part of the language house is the community which it provides once you finish it. There are always gatherings, new friends to be made, and wise long term residents who are glad to answer questions about anything! I would absolutely recommend the language house to anyone interested in having a fantastic adventure in Prague!

The TEFL house provided an amazing learning environment. The teachers who work there are all extremely knowledgeable and experienced. The amount of teaching experience offered throughout the course, and the feedback that is given by experienced teacher helps a great deal in building confidence, and the know how, to teach a well balanced English lesson. They care a lot about making sure you are adjusting to your new life abroad, and help with visa information, as well as job placement. I was able to find work before the course even ended, and started working 4 days after graduating. For anyone looking to do TEFL in Prague, TLH in an amazing place to do it.

I took the February 2014 TLH TEFL course without knowing what to expect. I felt I had a decent understanding of English grammar, and enough teaching experience that teaching English would come easily. I discovered very quickly that there was a great deal of grammar that I did not know, much less fully understand. The course itself provided a great basis for understanding grammar, with some study time outside of class necessary to fully understand the finer points. As for teaching, having different observers each week giving their unique feedback definitely helped me grow as a teacher and a lesson planner, taking advice from different perspectives and applying it even to levels I’ve never taught before.

A nice aspect of this TEFL course are the Czech lessons throughout the course. The lessons are taught entirely in Czech, and mostly in the style you will be teaching English. This gives you a good idea how your Czech students feel when you are teaching them entirely in English.

Not everything is perfect with this course, some of the content was very interesting to me personally, but does not seem applicable to the Czech students I teach. Lesson planning is an example of this. You will learn a very useful way to plan and teach a lesson, but teaching in the real world it will not always be possible to use the ESA method. I learned very quickly how to adapt the methods I learned to the classes I teach, but it would have been nice to learn other methods during the course.

TLH is great about helping you with questions and giving you an introduction to Prague, and since I have taken the course has improved. There is now an optional introduction the weekend before the course starts that helps you learn your way around the city. There is also a very nice tour on the first day of the course that hits many of the city’s highlights and finished with a welcome dinner with some of the staff. Throughout the course you’ll get information about job postings, as well as help with converting your CV to being more TEFL friendly and with mock interviews. While there is no guarantee of job placement after this course, there is more than enough help for you to find a job even before the course finishes.

The main reason I would recommend this course, is that the staff asks for feedback and actively tries to improve the course. As good as this course was for me, it will be even better now, so if you have any interest in TEFL or Prague this is a course you should seriously consider.

I took the course in August 2013 and my overall experience was very positive. As a non-native English speaker, I was very intimidated at first. But the staff was so helpful, friendly and enthusiastic that all my fears went away.

The course was hard and demanding but it was worth it. I probably learned more in a month than in an entire life of learning English myself. This is an intensive course but the instructors provided great feedback and help you improve on a daily basis.

If you are interested in teaching abroad this is the perfect course for you!

I recently took a four week course with TLH Prague (The Language House). This is the course you want if you have a desire to work locally in Prague teaching English!!! The course is quite intense – they cover a broad spectrum of methodology, practical teaching along with an extensive grammar review. Please plan for long days in class, teaching locals with an observer in the evening and a daily expectation for completed lesson plans for the following day. Please plan to have your banking and any personal matters sorted before the start of the course.

I completed an ‘on line’ TEFL course prior to my arrival that employed the PPP method. Please understand this type of approach will do you little to no good here. Thus far, I have used everything I learned from the TLH offering and nothing from my on line experience outside of a nice new dent in my pocket book! 🙂 The TLH course will prepare you in the best way possible to live and prosper teaching English in Prague – along with a supportive, extensive alumni network. Planning to teach in Prague? Scrap any idea to ‘pre-plan’ unproductively with an on line cert! I am hoping to benefit others by sharing my perspectives here. Prague bound? Don’t delay sign up for TLH…today!

The Language House in Prague is a very special institution – not merely because of its location, its history or its track record – but because of the spirit with which the place is run.

Chris Westergaard, owner and founder, has taken it upon himself to tailor the course to every individual. His attention to detail and correspondence with learners is like no other teacher I have come across.

He has adapted his institution over the years to cater to everything a TEFL student abroad needs. That includes tours, housing, assistance with cellphones, bank accounts, public transport, visas – EVERYTHING.

The course itself is challenging – but then it needs to be, doesn’t it? It prepares you for TEFL life in Prague like no other TEFL school can, simply because Language House TEFL has been doing this for so many years.

My suggestion? Just go. Do it.
