Before entering the first day of class at TESOL Costa Rica, I was arrogant and thought my 16 years of high school teaching experience coupled with my age and additional life experiences would translate into instant success and make for an easy “A”. I thought I could apply for any ESL position, get hired, and then teach language acquisition to non native speakers with ease. What a joke! Nonsense!! I was wrong on so many levels and am so very glad I was humbled and put in my place. After Day #1, I quickly adopted a “blank slate” mentality toward the course, and approached the readings, the assignments, and the actual student teaching with openness and respect. This course is hard. It will test your resolve, and at times you will want to quit, but those are the times that will determine who you really are, not as a teacher, but as a person. It’s not hyperbole, the workload and hours are insane; however, giving up is/was never an option. Whether I endeavor onward and teach ESL or go back into the traditional high school venue, I am already a much, much better teacher for having taken the course. I am thankful, and it’s this gratitude that has grounded me and offered up so much more perspective than I once had. Tough as nails course….. and worth every penny.

This course is 100% worth every penny and minute. The teachers are amazing, the experience teaching real English Languge Learners is so unique. The assignments and content are so relevant, you never feel like it’s a waste of time. I have been an ESL teacher for two years and this course prepared me to teach English even better than my college and teaching experience did. I love how the instructors focus on how to teach grammar and give us ideas and resources for activities that we can use in our classroom. I feel well equipped to teach anywhere in the world!

Homestays are amazing, the classroom is comfortable (coffee is always available!!) and the possibilities for adventure are endless. I am so grateful for this experience!!

When I decided to leave my “normal” life in the U.S. and move to Latin America to take a TEFL class in Costa Rica. I had almost no idea as to what to expect. Oh, I had information, but we filter information through our experiences. I have been a lifelong student and have had a pretty long life thus far, so I thought this would be just one more course. Nothing could have prepared me for the TEFL class. It was the most intense and rigorous 4 weeks of classwork that I have ever experienced. When I started I had no idea how one could teach a language entirely in the desired language to beginners. I also had a very specific audience that I wanted to teach, adult business people. After taking this course, I don’t care who I teach, bring them on. This course gave me the tools, confidence, and methods that I can use to teach any age group at any level and enjoy it. The experience of the staff was vast and they gave us an abundance of practical knowledge along with the teaching techniques. The hands-on teaching experience was invaluable. I taught absolute beginners and very high-level learners. When a group of people goes through an intense experience there is a bond that develops. As exhausted as all of my classmates were at the end, we were sad at the parting, but we all had an extreme sense of accomplishment. Only 3 of us stayed in Costa Rica. Two had jobs before the course was over. The course ended on Friday and I nailed my first interview the next Monday, doing exactly what I want to do. If you have adventure in your blood and wanderlust in your heart, the highly prestigious TEFL certificate and your passport will open the world to you.

I took the TEFL course in May of 2018 and it far exceeded my expectations. I began the course knowing nothing about teaching and now feel very comfortable putting lesson plans together and teaching a group of students at any level of English. The course work was intensive but quite manageable. I was still able to enjoy my evenings and weekends with my classmates and my host family, as well as take several weekend excursions. The instructors, Luke and Melanie, were both fantastic teachers and mentors. They were always available to assist and provide feedback with assignments and lesson plans.

My host family is amazing and was incredibly helpful with everything I needed during the course which allowed me to focus on the assignments and really do well. I have heard nothing but great things about other host families as well.

During the course we had several schools from the area come in to speak to us about their school which was great. Luke and Melanie have a great relationship with the schools around the area and are an excellent job search resource. It really seems as if there is an abundance of English teaching jobs here in Costa Rica.

Overall, I would highly recommend the TEFL Costa Rica course to anyone thinking about taking the leap! It has been an incredible experience. The course itself is fantastic and with more jobs and than teachers, you don’t have to worry about finding work!

My course at TESOL Costa Rica has exceeded my expectations. I have learned so much more about teaching and the English language than I expected. Barva is an incredible city to call home for the month-long course. The town is small enough that I always felt safe, but big enough and close to Heredia and San Jose so there’s always something new to do. The coursework for me was challenging, but manageable. I was able to enjoy all of my weekends and take excursions around Costa Rica. When I was studying and lesson planning, my homestay was awesome. The school set me up with a great family that did whatever they could to help me.

In class, I made a lot of new friends. Being together every day forced us to really get to know one another. We had a class of around 15 people. It’s nice to have a large group with lots of different personalities and learning styles. Even just watching my instructors, Luke and Melanie, teach US… taught me something about how to manage a classroom. Overall, I’ve learned so much. I got to see a lot of Heredia and Costa Rica. I feel ready to apply for and take on jobs anywhere in the world. But after the experience here, I’m pretty sure I’m staying in Costa Rica 😉

The Costa Rica TESOL Course has my absolute highest recommendation. The course is designed to take you from “zero” to “teacher” in 4weeks. The course is an intense 4wks but by the end, the instructors will have provided you enough tools to start a career and grow as an English Language Teacher. I personally have a degree in Elementary Education however my experience is in math and science. English grammar has NEVER been my strength but I can confidently say that after completing this course I actually understand and can teach English grammar rules. The Costa Rica TESOL instructors have a way of making the complex easy unlike so many university programs that like to take the complex and make it incomprehensible to the average person.

About a year ago, I made the decision to become an ESL teacher. As part of this process, I began a 15month Master’s Degree in Teaching English Language Learners. I am still in the program, but I wasn’t happy with the level of practical experience and teaching methodology being offered in the program. The Costa Rica TESOL course gave me exactly what I was looking for plus highlighted most of the curriculum I have seen in my Master’s program, to date. Honestly, I learned more in 4wks than I learned in the first 8months of my degree program. I tell you this to stress just how comprehensive the course actually is however, I must reiterate that it is all taught in a way that makes the complex easy. This in no way means the course is easy but I can guarantee it is an excellent learning opportunity for people with zero teaching experience as well as those with experience. For those with experience, forget what you know and open yourself to new ideas and methods (great continuing education course if you are looking for a new perspective).

Lastly, I want to mention the practical teaching experience. In this course you have the opportunity to teach all levels of English Language Learners. This experience is very authentic as you will work with real students, in various schools, throughout the local community. This experience is EXTREMELY beneficial. I say this as someone who has already taught and been through a “student teacher” training program. For this experience alone, I would not recommend attending a TESOL certification course that does not have a practical teaching component. I can’t imagine stepping into a ESL classroom without having had the practical experience.

While I did not choose to stay in Costa Rica for full-time employment as an English teacher, I can tell you that Costa Rica TESOL has a strong working relationship with many employers in the country. At about week 3 of your TESOL course, you will be actively recruited by these employers.

I can’t say thank you enough to Costa Rica TESOL!

Good Luck and I hope this review is helpful to you and your future English teaching endeavors!

Wendy

If you’re planning on getting a TEFL certificate, International TEFL academy is the best of the best. When I decided to get certified I found many schools but this one seemed like the most qualified one and it did live up to my expectations. I learned so much even though I already had 2 years of experience in the teaching field. They helped me grow not only as a teacher but also as a person and I’m so grateful for the instructors, staff and owners efforts and time, they are truly great mentors. It was an experience like no other and I fully recommend it.

The TESOL course at Costa Rica TESOL was one of the fastest months of my life! I learnt how to teach and manage any conceivable TESOL classroom, how to plan, evaluate and refine my lessons and more about grammar than I knew was possible. Now I have a globally recognised TESOL certificate from a school affiliated with the International TEFL Academy!

Melanie, Luke, Brent and Jamie were great instructors, always happy to help and offer suggestions on every lesson plan or answer questions about life, the universe and everything in it. The assignments were relevant and educational, and the style of teaching reflected the current model of teaching in an ESL classroom.

Most importantly, the practical lessons helped prepare me for the reality of ESL teaching. Due to the range of levels and student backgrounds in the practicum classes, I now have the experience I need to walk into any ESL classroom and feel confident about what to expect. The feedback from these practical lessons was invaluable, but perhaps more importantly, taught me to reflect upon my own teaching practices and develop the habits of a good ESL teacher.

Since completing the course, I have found two jobs, both on the advice of the instructors who know the local market intimately. This insider perspective is what distinguishes TESOL Costa Rica from any other TESOL course, and is the reason I recommend this school to anyone who has ever wanted to teach ESL in Central America.

If you are thinking of coming to Costa Rica for a TEFL certification look no further than this fantastic program offered by the International TEFL Academy. Although the course is only one month, I feel fully prepared to tackle the world of ESL in any location. The resources, instruction, and open communication truly set this course apart and constantly reaffirmed my decision to be a part of this program.

Melanie, Luke, and Monica displayed a variety of teaching methodologies that I will be able to take with me going forward. They are all very in touch with the student experience and are able to alleviate student doubts with ease.

In addition to facilitating your entry to the ESL world, the 10 hours of real-world experience built into this program are invaluable to your development as a teacher. Nothing comes close to standing in front of a classroom after creating a lesson and all the activities from scratch; it’s a very empowering experience.

In short, I highly recommend this program. You will not regret any moment of your time here and you will come out prepared to take on the world of ESL!

I found my experience at TESOL Costa Rica to be extremely rewarding. Georgia Grant, who handles student affairs, was super helpful prior to my arrival in Costa Rica. The school offers an airport pickup service, they help you find a good homestay situation, and they provide ample information concerning border runs and other important tips for living in Costa Rica. The class itself was very challenging, but it was manageable if you stay on top of the workload. The most stressful and probably the most useful part of the course were the practical teaching sessions. We worked constantly on lesson planning throughout the course, and I found the observers’ constructive criticism of my classes to be very useful. Melanie and Monica were great instructors, and now I feel far more prepared to be an international English teacher (I would also like to give a shoutout to Karen at the front desk for being such a positive and warm-hearted addition to the TESOL Costa Rica team). During this course, I learned a ton about lesson planning, grammar, and the specifics of teaching English in Costa Rica. TESOL Costa Rica exceeded my expectations, and I would recommend this school to anyone interested in teaching English in Latin America.
