So how exactly are you supposed to know that an accrediting institution is legitimate and not some kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chea.org\/important-questions-about-degree-mills\"><strong>accreditation mill<\/strong><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>You can check government lists of registered accreditors, but they do not cover all organizations that claim to accredit non-degree granting programs, such as TEFL. The big international professional associations stay neutral or mute on the quality of TEFL accreditors.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you need to decide for yourself if an organization is worthy of your trust. To help you make that decision, this article will provide questions for you to ask as you scrutinize an accreditor\u2019s website, as well as search tips and links to resources for verifying an organization&#8217;s claims. Their policies are thorough, their standards are detailed. They tell you where their office is, who works there, how to contact them, and who they&#8217;ve accredited. The more <em>verifiable<\/em> information they share, the more you can trust them.<\/p>\n<p>Can you identify the agency\u2019s leaders, standards, policies, funding? Where is it based? What laws govern it?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accountability\"><\/span>Accountability<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To be held accountable, organizations need to share a record of the work they&#8217;ve done. They must be available to answer questions about their work.<\/p>\n<p>How does the accreditor demonstrate its work? Can you find a list a programs or institutions that the accreditor has validated? Can you identify an authoritative body which recognizes the accreditor and\/or reviews its performance?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Professionalism\"><\/span>Professionalism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Accreditation is a service to a profession&#8211; to its students, trainers, practitioners, and employers. Legitimate accreditors are involved in the community their work is intended to serve.<\/p>\n<p>Can you verify that the accreditor belongs to professional organizations and participates in professional activities? Is it accepted by the teaching community? Location<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In what country is the accreditor based?<br \/>\nWhat is their address and\u00a0telephone number?<br \/>\nHow can you contact them?<br \/>\nIs their address a physical location, or a post office box or &#8220;virtual office&#8221;?<br \/>\nDoes the website show images of buildings? If so, whose are they?<\/p>\n<p>Location is essential in order to know what laws govern the organization and where it files taxes.\u00a0Search with quotes to see if any other businesses share the same address or phone number. Using a reverse image search tool, look up images of buildings to see if the building belongs anywhere else. For example, I found an image of the Wharton School in Pennsylvania being used without explanation on a website of a school supposedly located in Paris.<\/p>\n<div class=\"info\">\n<h4>Where to check:<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"falist checkcircle\">\n<li><strong>Accreditor&#8217;s website:<\/strong>\u00a0Footer, Contact page, or About page.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other sources:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\">Google maps<\/a>\u00a0(try street view to see the building); local business or telephone directories; Google&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/1325808?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=3180360\">reverse image search<\/a>\u00a0(instructions <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/websearch\/answer\/1325808?hl=en&amp;ref_topic=3180360\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Quality_Standards\"><\/span>2. Quality Standards<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Does this accreditor accredit qualifications, courses, or institutions?<br \/>\nAre the accreditation standards clear and specific, or generic and vacuous?<br \/>\nAre the published standards unique or copied from another website?<br \/>\nHow long does the accreditation process take?<br \/>\nWhat methods do they use to evaluate a course or school?<br \/>\nHow often does the accrediting agency visit an organization in person?<\/p>\n<p>After reading their documentation, you should get a sense of whether the process is thorough and careful or a quick rubber stamp after money is exchanged.<\/p>\n<div class=\"info\">\n<h4>Where to check:<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"falist checkcircle\">\n<li><strong>Accreditor&#8217;s website:\u00a0<\/strong>A \u201cStandards\u201d or \u201cAccreditation Process\u201d section.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other sources:<\/strong>\u00a0Using quotes, search for snippets of text from policy pages in Google or use a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyscape.com\">plagiarized text detector<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Directors_and_Staff\"><\/span>3. Directors and Staff<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What is the name of the president or CEO?<br \/>\nWho is on the board of directors?<br \/>\nWho is responsible for moderating courses?<br \/>\nAre the accreditors paid staff or volunteers?<br \/>\nWhat are their credentials?<br \/>\nAre they affiliated with other organizations in the field?<\/p>\n<p>The organization should make you feel confident that the\u00a0personnel are well trained to perform accreditation. Independence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How is this organization funded?<br \/>\nHow many different schools have they accredited?<br \/>\nWho owns the institutions they have accredited?<br \/>\nDo the accredited institutions belong to a single parent company?<br \/>\nIs there a relationship between the accreditor, its employees or board members, and the accredited companies?<br \/>\nDo the accreditor and the accredited school websites looks similar?<br \/>\nAre any of the websites hosted on the same server?<\/p>\n<p>Finding connections is one of the funnest parts of doing research into TEFL accreditation. Clients or Members<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Do the schools accredited by this organization look legitimate and professional?<br \/>\nDo the accredited schools provide verifiable information, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>names of owners and employees<\/li>\n<li>verifiable educational credentials of staff<\/li>\n<li>physical address, photos of their location<\/li>\n<li>contact information<\/li>\n<li>terms of use, privacy policy, etc.<\/li>\n<li>business registration number<\/li>\n<li>detailed course outline and syllabus<\/li>\n<li>course price lists and start dates<\/li>\n<li>membership in professional or business organizations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"info\">\n<h4>Where to check:<\/h4>\n<ul class=\"falist checkcircle\">\n<li>Federal or State\/Provincial business registry<\/li>\n<li>Local Municipal Chamber of Commerce<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbb.org\/\">Better Business Bureau<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Authority\"><\/span>6. Authority<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Does a government body regulate this agency?<br \/>\nDoes the organization provide a business or charity registration number?<br \/>\nDoes this accreditor belong to a national quality assurance network?<br \/>\nDo reputable agencies or professionals reference this agency?<\/p>\n<p>An accreditor shouldn&#8217;t fail just because it is not regulated by a government body&#8211; the law may not require this. Search images of people used on the website, especially those next to testimonials or staff profiles, to see if they are stock images used elsewhere on the web. Search images of buildings to see if they belong anywhere else.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Plagiarized text detector:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyscape.com\">http:\/\/www.copyscape.com<\/a> &#8211; Enter the URL of a page, such the organizations&#8217;s description, a policy page, or an &#8220;accreditation process&#8221; page, to see if the text is unique to the agency or duplicated elsewhere on the web.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Internet Archive&#8217;s Wayback Machine:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\">https:\/\/web.archive.org<\/a> &#8211; Compare earlier versions of a website with what is published today.
