I was warned well before the start of the course about the intensity of it and it did not disappoint. And it did not disappoint in the structure and content of the course either. We were equipped during the course with a well rounded set of frameworks to work with as teachers, and while the frameworks are by nature blocky and somewhat inflexible, it’s up to us to adapt them – and it is a very useful set of “tools”. The resource production and management is a tiny bit misleading, since in most of the schools the resources are much more scarce, and being able to print and copy at will might have a spoiling effect. Overall I must say it was a fun and enjoyable experience – if in a somewhat tiring way. I started work at another language school on Monday the week after we finished the course, and I’m very much looking forward to expand my horizons both literally and figuratively. And to sleep 😀

With my fellow CELTA colleagues and tutors I could see a lot of points to work on and the environment was so friendly that I never felt ashamed of making mistakes. Our tutors proceeded with their input sessions following the same steps they recommended us to take, giving evidence that all of them were practicable and effective. Every lesson we learned felt like the tutors were guiding us to discover things by ourselves instead of just making us swallow and accept new information. They were really inspiring role models.
I have been teaching since 1996. Although I am experienced, I am fully aware that I have a lot to learn. During CELTA I had the opportunity to get rid of some old bad habits I acquired the last few years. Bits that should be improved were detected with the help of self-assessment (hot and cold reflections), tutor’s feedback and peers’s response to my TP. CELTA in The English Academy was a challenging course – I always knew it would be – but it was greatly rewarding since day one.

Celta course in The English Academy in Dublin was one of the toughest, but most enjoyable experiences in my study-life. Overall, the program was very demanding and intense, but it really gave me a good idea of what it is really like, to stand in front of the group of students and teach (..and what’s going on ‘behind the scenes’!). Tutors’ support was great and the atmosphere between my fellow teachers-in-training really supportive and encouraging. The Academy made everything go smooth – starting with providing us with loads of teaching materials to help with our daily tasks, and ending with daily supplies of tea and coffee for the break times :)

Overall there is great support and encouragement felt in The English Academy. The course content is fascinating. Everything is well balanced and paced. Feedback has always been constructive, helping you to breakdown previous notions of teaching and gives you the chance to think about and employ new and better methods of teaching. The instructors are very generous with their time and always offer help and are ready to help.
I think more guidance for lessons plans should be offered. Not for the content of the lesson but the actual layout and short hand used in the writing of a lesson plan. There are great facilities and resources in the Academy but perhaps more guidance with them could be beneficial
